Corona-Testpflicht auch bei Transit in Deutschland

Corona testing also mandatory for transit in Germany

Germany requires all passengers entering the country by air to have a negative Covid 19 test. As Switzerland also requires, passengers will otherwise not be allowed to board the plane.

As Lufthansa emphasized to its customers in a letter dated April 7, this applies to all passengers over the age of six who wish to enter Germany from high-risk and also from non-risk areas. And: this rule also applies to all passengers with a connecting flight in Frankfurt or Munich.

This mandatory testing for transit passengers also affects Swiss passengers. Many direct connections operated by Swiss and Edelweiss are currently not on the schedule. Until now, the Swiss airlines referred passengers to the connecting flights with Lufthansa via the two hubs in Frankfurt and Munich for the corresponding destinations.

And according to Lufthansa, these are currently the rules of Germany: accepted are antigen, PCR, LAMP and TMA tests, which are carried out at certified test centers. Self-tests are excluded and not valid. The test may take place no more than 48 hours before entry.

Antigen-Schnelltests bei Einreise am Flughafen Zürich

Antigen rapid tests on entry at Zurich airport

New guidelines for entry into Switzerland were defined as of March 15. Based on these guidelines, passengers entering Switzerland from a non-risk country who were unable to take a PCR test abroad for a recognized reason can submit a rapid antigen test when entering Switzerland. This possibility is likely to become more explosive, especially during the Easter vacations, when the availability of tests could be limited in many countries.

Neu reicht ein Antigen-Test für die Einreise

An antigen test is now sufficient for entry into the country

The Federal Council relaxes travel restrictions on February 22.

The return journey from vacation to Switzerland will be a little bit easier - and cheaper. The Federal Council has relaxed the Corona test obligation for air passengers to Switzerland. An antigen test is now sufficient, but it must not be older than 24 hours. This test variant usually costs about half as much as the previously required PCR test and is offered free of charge by many hotels at vacation destinations to their guests.

It will also be easier for family vacations: children under the age of 12 will now be exempt from compulsory testing. The new rules will apply from February 22, according to the Federal Council's decree. Under special circumstances, such as when no corona test is possible with reasonable effort, airlines will be allowed to take untested passengers on board. Also, people who prove with a medical certificate that they are cured of Covid-19 do not need a test to fly. New transients are generally exempt from any testing requirement.

Wichtige Informationen für Flugreisende mit Endziel oder Transfer in der Schweiz

Negative Covid-19 test result and registration of electronic contact details required before travelling

Proof of negative Covid 19 test result and electronic contact data entry before flight departure.

As of February 8, 2021, all air travelers must complete the electronic contact information form and present a negative PCR test result upon entry into Switzerland.

This test must not be older than 72 hours at the time of departure and it is mandatory to have it before the flight and to show it to the ground staff at the check-in or gate at the point of departure. The test proof is valid regardless of the country of departure and also for transit passengers traveling via Switzerland to their final destination.

Passengers whose journey takes them from abroad to Switzerland should also note that they will only receive a confirmation at online check-in. Guests will receive their boarding pass at the check-in counter.

SWISS recommends that you allow sufficient time for this and also find out in advance about the type of mask that must be worn on board. You can find an overview here.

Negative test result

You must be able to show proof of a negative coronavirus test in two situations:

  • If you enter Switzerland by air. Note: You must be able to show proof of your negative test already on boarding. Without a negative test result you are not allowed to board the aircraft.
  • If you have stayed in a country with an increased risk of infection within the ten days before entering Switzerland. In this case you must always be able to show proof of a negative test result, even if you enter Switzerland by bus, rail, car, etc.

Exceptions: Children under age 12 are not subject to the testing requirement and do not need proof of a negative test result. There are other exceptions in addition to this. You’ll find details in the Exemptions from the Testing and Quarantine Requirement section.

Requirements the test must meet

Do you have to show proof of a negative test result on entering Switzerland? If so, your coronavirus test must meet the following requirements:

  • The test must have been conducted no more than 72 hours before your entry to Switzerland.
  • The test must have been a molecular-biological analysis for the new coronavirus, for example a PCR test. The result of a rapid antigen test is not sufficient.
  • The result of the test must be negative.

Speichel statt Stäbchen – neue Corona-Tests im Testcenter am Flughafen Zürich

Saliva instead of swabs – new coronavirus tests in the Zurich Airport testing centre

As per now, coronavirus testing capacity at the Zurich Airport testing centre is to be expanded through the addition of provider Ender Diagnostics. The COVID tests offered by this service will be carried out via saliva samples rather than nasal swabs. Test results will be available within around five hours, rather than 24 to 48 hours for existing PCR tests. The testing centre will be operated by Checkport, a subsidiary of Swissport.

The new provider at the Zurich Airport testing centre, Ender Diagnostics, offers a new type of PCR test which uses saliva samples rather than conventional nasal swabs, making it a much more comfortable method. These tests are sold in the centre as self-testing kits and are carried out independently in testing booths without the need for medical staff. The testing booths are cleaned after each use.

This type of COVID test costs CHF 195 and the test result is available around five hours later. Once completed, tests are transported to the Swiss Analysis AG laboratory in Tägerwilen four times per day by a special courier. Tests that take place after 5 p.m. will be processed early the next morning. Customers will be informed of their test result by e-mail. Tests can currently be taken each day between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. without an appointment. The airport’s testing centre is located in the former Cards and ID Office in Check-in 2 on level 1. The tests are intended for people who are not showing symptoms and who need to take a test in order to travel or attend an event. This particularly concerns flight passengers since only PCR tests are authorised by the relevant authorities for travel to countries which require a COVID-19 test.

Expanded testing capacities
The pharmacy Amavita moved into the airport’s testing centre back in early December. Open daily, it offers rapid coronavirus tests for people with COVID-19 symptoms (not authorised for travel) by appointment (tel.: 058 878 25 60). The services provided by the Airport Medical Center remain available, including PCR tests and IgG antibody tests.
