Andrea in Georgia

Georgia – an unknown gem in the Caucasus

During one week, we had the opportunity to experience a fascinating study trip through Georgia with Travelhouse. Various regions, vibrant culture, and an impressive history made this journey something special. As an all-female group, we always felt safe. We returned with open hearts and many impressions, and we can wholeheartedly recommend Georgia as a travel destination.

Tbilisi – vibrant capital full of charm
With a direct flight from Edelweiss, we landed in Tbilisi early in the morning. After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we set out to explore the old town. Amidst colorful wooden balconies, narrow alleys, the famous sulfur baths, and the charming puppet theater, we quickly felt the unique character of the city. The Narikala Fortress loomed above us while we admired intricately crafted gold artifacts in the National Museum’s treasury. Rustaveli Avenue revealed itself as the bustling main artery of the capital.

Samtskhe-Javakheti – the religious heart of the country
In Mtskheta, the ancient capital and spiritual center of Georgia, we visited the Jvari Monastery with its breathtaking view over the valley and the monumental Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Further south, in Akhaltsikhe, we explored the impressively restored Rabati Fortress. A highlight was the rock city of Vardzia, which deeply impressed us with its sheer size and the idea of once housing 50,000 inhabitants.

Greater Caucasus – the roof of Europe
We left behind spring temperatures as we crossed the Cross Pass on the Georgian Military Highway. In a snowstorm, we reached Stepantsminda at the foot of the majestic Kazbek mountain. The next day, our route – partly on foot, partly by off-road vehicle – led us up to the legendary Gergeti Trinity Church. Nestled within the wild scenery of the Greater Caucasus, the panorama was unforgettable.

Kakheti – the cradle of wine
Back in warmer climes, we discovered Georgia’s deeply rooted wine tradition in Kakheti. At wineries, we tasted Kvevri wines — produced in large clay amphorae following centuries-old methods. Alongside, we enjoyed local specialties like Khachapuri, Khinkali, and sweet Churchkhelas with a local family. Georgian cuisine is hearty, rich, and warm-hearted.

A fitting finale
Back in Tbilisi, our journey ended with a festive dinner featuring typical dishes and a good glass of wine. After a short night, we were taken to the airport early in the morning. With many memories in our luggage and smiles on our faces, we flew back to Zurich — inspired by a country that surprises, moves, and deeply touches.
